Aberdeen team in Formula Student race09/07/2011

Engineering students from Aberdeen will be at the home of British motor racing next week to compete against peers from across the world.

More than 125 teams from 30 countries will take part in Formula Student, which pits young engineers against each other to design and build the best single-seater racing car.

Aberdeen University's team, Tau Racing, was ranked second among the Scottish entrants at last year's event, organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the 17 student engineers hope to go one better when they return to Silverstone on Wednesday, July 13.

The team's principal sponsor for the competition, in which cars are judged on categories including fuel efficiency, acceleration, design and endurance, is Aberdeen-based energy consultant ADIL.

ADIL director Tim Sibley, said: "I am sure for these students there is absolutely nothing else as fulfilling as designing and building this Fl-style car and watching it compete against other vehicles from around the world.

"As an organisation immersed in the energy industry, helping to foster and develop that enthusiasm for engineering could not be more important."

Daniel Ahrens, Tau's project manager, said Formula Student was one of the best challenges young engineers could face. He added: "Being able to compare car designs with over a hundred other universities from around the world is an amazing feeling, especially when you end up wheel-towheel on the track to prove yours is better."
